New Delhi. In the politics of India, we often talk about dynasty, but in the neighboring country of Sri Lanka these days a whole family is running the government of the country. Basil Rajapaksa, another member of the Rajapaksa family, who has an influence in Sri Lankan politics, recently took over as the country’s Finance Minister and thus strengthened the Rajapaksa family’s hold on power.
From the President, the Prime Minister to the Ministry of Agriculture and Finance, four real brothers are occupied. Not only this, a total of 7 members of the family are involved in the government. In other words, it can also be said that here the family is the government.
Basil Rajapakse (70) is the youngest of the brothers and his brother Gotabaya Rajapakse is the President, Mahinda Rajapakse the Prime Minister, Chamal Rajapakse is the Minister of Agriculture. With Basil joining the Council of Ministers, the number of Rajapaksa family members in the government has gone up to seven.
Till now the finance ministry was with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, now he has the responsibility of economic policy and plan implementation. Basil Rajapakse was considered the intellectual pillar of the Mahinda Rajapakse administration from 2010 to 2015. Basil holds dual citizenship of the US and Sri Lanka and has also served as the head of all key task forces from economic management to the environment.
Basil did not contest last year’s parliamentary election and has reached Parliament through a national list of elected MPs. A parliamentarian from the ruling SLPP national list resigned this week, paving the way for Basik to enter parliament.
